MATTHEWGOODVANCOUVER [11 Nov 2009|04:57am]
[ mood | matthewgoodvancouver ]
[ music | Matthew Good - Load Me Up ]

"MATTHEWGOODVANCOUVER" is exactly what is written on Matthew Good's latest and greatest release, "Vancouver" - an album I actually purchased on vinyl... maybe the first album I've ever bought new in vinyl. What's beautiful about this is seeing it spelled out for me. I've had a love/hate relationship with Vancouver my entire life and Matthew Good always hits home for me.

Advice of the Day: Listen to Matthew Good's lyrics. His writing never fails.

J'veux Ton Amour et Je Veux Ta Ravanche [20 Oct 2009|05:41pm]
[ mood | photo editing slavery ]
[ music | Lady Gaga - Alejandro ]

A lot of people think I am crazy for my latest obsession of Lady Gaga, and quite frankly, I am too. Last year when I was reviewing the best pop songs in its genre, I had "Just Dance" as number one. Many of friends slammed the tune, especially for its poor taste in lyrics, eg. "I love this record baby but I can't see straight anymore. Keep it cool, what's the name of this club? I can't remember but it's alright. Despite my disregard for song lyrics in general, the lyrics are actually quite properly placed even though they are stupid. As silly as it sounds, the song is completely aware of itself. Don't most young folks go to clubs to get wasted and stupid just to have fun?

Last year, I wasn't sure what to think of Lady Gaga. I am a little more difficult with my pop music as my taste in more gravitated towards industrial and post rock. I thought she was interesting, her tunes were catchy but I wasn't sold. This year she has hit it big. Single after single, such well-produced pop songs and extremely well written hooks. When I started seeing her performances on TV, it was then that I realized that this girl is for real. For one, she does not lip sync and she knows her own material in order to take part in playing the instruments herself. She creates the production and spectacle all on her own with her team.

In addition to her stage persona, I am in love with her off-stage personality. She's a hippie, most recently speaking up for gay rights and playing John Lennon's "Imagine" that even Yoko Ono gave an ovation to via Twitter. She stands for a free woman and people slam her for that. This is the age old double standard of if men are having sex with a ton of girls, that's fine - however, if a woman is sleeping around, she's a slut. She is not afraid to speak her mind and be herself. I respect Gaga so much - I believe she is a true artist. I hope she can hold the stamina she's had going over the last year. I'm not a fan of indifference and I have to say, it's nice to see a little bit of passion in the world.

Advice of the Day: Do not put off editing a slew of images over 4 months. It builds up QUICK. Just saying. Quote of the Day is brought to you by Lady Gaga: "I know that we are young and I know you may love me. But I just can't be with you like this anymore."

[ music | Lady GaGa - Bad Romance (Leak) ]

Well, the time has finally come. I am switching wallets and in my old wallet, I am finding my old credit cards and old debit cards and really, I've only kept them because I've been putting off on how to properly dispose my personal information. I am one of the most paranoid people on the planet when it comes to my private information. I bet you wouldn't think that because of my online presence, but honestly, throwing out prescriptions, receipts - anything - I usually destroy relentlessly.

Here are the steps I've taken to properly dispose my old credit card:

1. Run a strong magnet over the strip
2. Sandpaper on the signature strip
3. Cut into 40-50 pieces, especially through card number and name
4. Dispose by distributing in different garbage bags

How's that for paranoia? Am I missing anything?

Advice of the Day: You can never be too careful. Your quote of the day is brought to you by Lady GaGa: "I want your love and I want your revenge. I want your love, I don't want to be friends."

My Sentiments [30 Sep 2009|04:06pm]
[ mood | dancing to the worst song ]
[ music | Fall on Your Sword - Shatner of the Mount ]

Someone showed me a clip from Californication, a show starring my beloved David Duchovny. There is a scene where Henry Rollins is interviewing Duchovny's character and they comment on Internet communications:

Henry Rollins: What’s your latest obsession?

Hank Moody: Just the fact that people seem to be getting dumber and dumber. You know, I mean we have all this amazing technology and yet computers have turned into basically four figure wank machines. The internet was supposed to set us free, democratize us, but all it’s really given us is Howard Dean’s aborted candidacy and 24 hour a day access to kiddie porn. People…they don’t write anymore - they blog. Instead of talking, they text, no punctuation, no grammar: LOL this and LMFAO that. You know, it just seems to me it’s just a bunch of stupid people pseudo-communicating with a bunch of other stupid people at a proto-language that resembles more what cavemen used to speak than the King’s English.

Henry Rollins: Yet you’re part of the problem, I mean you’re out there blogging with the best of them.

Hank Moody: Hence my self-loathing.

I won't lie to you - when I was 12 years old and writing online, I never would have thought that it would have expanded to where we are today. The latest trend seems to be self-proclaimed "social media experts" but really, who are they kidding? Just because you have a blog and a Twitter account where you "@ reply" everything that breathes doesn't mean you're some sort of expert.

Just saying. ;)

Advice of the Day: Set your social hierarchy. Your quote of the day is brought to you by Hank Moody of Californication. (See above.)

Orange Squeeze [31 Aug 2009|08:45am]
[ mood | might throw up. might. ]
[ music | Thrice - Red Sky ]

"Orange Squeeze"... That's the name of the Jugo Juice drink I am sipping on right now and it's making me queasy (must be the extreme amounts of citrus) but in the mornings, I crave sugar and beggars can't be choosers.

I was having some sort of anxiety problem on the SkyTrain this morning when I was thinking about the Linux exams that I have been avoiding for two years. I worked my ass off to attain my MCSA and wound up in a job where I don't do much Windows administration outside of Active Directory. That said, I am slightly more comfortable in Linux and using a command line interface than where I was when I was in school.

I think certifications are slightly bs in a way because all it really shows is that you can retain large amounts of information in your head. If I don't know how to do something... My certification would give me a starting point but man pages and being able to Google it would probably be the realistic route to go. We've been spoiled with Google and search engines - finding information is so easy but believe it or not, it's a skill.

Advice of the Day: If you are feeling sick, do not drink more citrus drinks. Bad idea. Pathetic news of the day: British Columbia has the lowest minimum and one of the highest costs of living. Your quote of the day is brought to you by Thrice: "Look and see the sky turn red... Like blood it covers over me."

Resisted Retail Therapy [19 Aug 2009|08:37am]
[ mood | feeling kinda sick ]
[ music | Shakira - She Wolf ]

Yesterday I had made plans to have a "Me Day" in which I travel to West Broadway after work and take a look at some new camera gear. Maybe some shoe shopping. Maybe a spinach and cheese croissant!... Unfortunately, I was interrupted because we're in crunchtime and I had to go back to work.

Nonetheless, I had intentions to check out the new Olympus E-P1 which features 'mirrorless' technology and in turn, has a compact and slim body. I was a little disappointed with the store's display model since it had a zoom lens (barf) and lacked the viewfinder. It functioned exactly like a point and shoot and in the Camera Explorer on Flickr, that's what it's categorized as. I didn't spend much intimate time with it, but I would consider adding it to my toy collection if it weren't priced for over $1000+. Definitely cute, but much too costly for what it is.

I'd like to see how the video performs at concerts. It seems like every camera has to have a video functionality built in to sell. Following the Nikon D90 came the Canon 5D Mark II, Canon Rebel T1i and the Nikon D5000. I wouldn't be surprised if this became a regular thing with DSLRS. The fatal flaw that the D90 has and the 5D Mark II reigns supreme over is the lack of an audio input jack. The Nikon D90 captures ambient sound perfectly but when in an area that is decibel-congested, it fails big time. I've recorded sound separately with my Canon PowerShot G9 and used it to overlay my D90 video footage. I wish that I wouldn't have to rely on carrying more gear to do video.

Advice of the Day: Indian food always seems like a good idea at first. (I usually end up throwing up at the end of the night.) Your quote of the day is brought to you by my homegirl Shakira: "I've been devoting myself to you, Monday to Monday and Friday to Friday. Not getting enough retribution would be a sentence to keep me at it?" Indeed.

Resurrection [01 Jul 2009|11:30pm]
[ mood | a little weird ]
[ music | The Beatles - In My Life ]

"There are places I'll remember, all my life though some have changed. Some forever not for better, some have gone and some remain. All these places have their moments with lovers and friends I still can recall. Some are dead and some are living, in my life I've loved them all." -the Beatles

I've been writing online before the term "blog" was created, at the age of 12 - which means I have been sharing tidbits of my life for a little over half my life. I've played with each toy as they've reached their peak, and eventually their decline (Godspeed Geocities and ICQ)... but after seven years, I come back to you LiveJournal.

Out of all my portals, LiveJournal is the prime venue for writing articles. As a pop culture enthusiast, I've been frustrated with the lack the space to share my thoughts on latest technologies, summer blockbusters, and recent events....

And so, Cheap Propaganda, I'm bringing you back from the dead.

Advice of the Day: If you're going to survive all of Canada Day festivities, make sure you have a day off sometime between the day before and the day after. Me? I just won't do all festivities... (but boy, I wish I watched the fireworks.) Your quote of the day is brought to your by the Beatles: "Though I know I'll never lose affection for people and things that went before - I know I'll often stop and think about them in my life... I love you more."
